Ready, Set, Soar Ohio Presents Legislative Champion Award to Sen. Blessing and Rep. Russo

“Fighting for the First 1,000 Days” Award Recognizes Commitment to Advocating on Behalf of Ohio Pregnant Women, Infants, and Toddlers

COLUMBUS, OH – Today, Ready, Set, Soar Ohio – an initiative of Groundwork Ohio – awarded State Senator Louis W. Blessing, III and State Representative Allison Russo with the “Fighting for the First 1,000 Days” award. The award recognizes legislators’ commitment to high-quality evidence-based programs that support children and their families during the prenatal period to age 3.

“I am pleased to present this award to Senator Blessing and Representative Russo, two legislative champions who are committed to investing in the earliest, most critical years of a child’s life,” said Shannon Jones, Executive Director of Groundwork Ohio. “Through their leadership at the Statehouse, Senator Blessing and Representative Russo are laying the groundwork to ensure that all Ohio children and their families have the support they need to reach their full potential.”

The first 1,000 days set the foundation for the rest of a child’s life, with more than 80% of brain development happening during the first three years. Public investment in high-quality early interventions – especially programs targeted at the earliest years of a child’s life – builds stronger families and helps children success in school and beyond.

Senator Blessing and Representative Russo were presented the award during the “State of Babies in Ohio’s FY22-23 Budget” event hosted by Ready, Set, Soar Ohio. A recording of the event can be viewed here.
